I don’t want to be angry on this blog, but sometimes the world is so out of proportion that my head spins. As I write this, there are children starving to death . There are children being taught to hate other children. There are children breaking stones and weaving rugs and sewing soccer balls. And then there are children getting pedicures and manicures and makeovers. It’s a chicken and egg question–is it the companies marketing to children who are creating the demand, or is it the companies responding to the market of parents who can’t/won’t/don’t want to say no who will buy their children anything at which they point their well-manicured little fingers? It’s not the kids’ faults–it’s natural for kids in a consumer society to want everything they see–and at the end of the day it’s not the fault of companies either, since they’d sell sand in the desert to make a buck if they could–it’s the fault of parents with more dollars than sense.
Where’s the social justice in this?
So in honor of girls (young and old) everywhere who show strength, courage and common sense, today’s knitted object is my Pippi Sweater. Traditionally, a Pippitröja (as in Pippi Longstocking) is red and blue stripes on a white background. I’m not particularly fond of that color combination in my clothing so I made it in gray with purple and green stripes. The thing is just the stripes: it’s a 4 row stripe: Row 1: *k1 color A, k1 color B*; Rows 2 and 3: k all color B; Row 4, *k1 color B, k1 color A*. Then the background color for 10 rows and the stripe in your second color combination.
